Our
Story
About us.
We’re a Dutch couple who fell in love with Koh Chang and made it our home back in May 2011. When we took over Oasis, it was already a special place, but over the years we’ve slowly rebuilt and improved everything to create the relaxed jungle hideaway it is today.
We feel lucky to work with a great team of Thai and Cambodian staff who help make Oasis warm, welcoming, and full of good vibes. Whether you’re here for a few days or a few weeks, we hope you feel right at home.
Koh Chang Information
Welcome to Koh Chang!
Koh Chang, or “Elephant Island” (named for its elephant-shaped headland), is one of Thailand’s hidden gems, part of the protected Mu Koh Chang National Marine Park. Over 70% of the island is covered in untouched rainforest, making it a peaceful retreat from the busier parts of Thailand. While development along the coast has picked up in recent years, Koh Chang remains a paradise with its white sand beaches, stunning waterfalls, lush mangroves, and a jungle interior that has been left mostly undisturbed. You’ll find a wide variety of wildlife here—birds, snakes, deer, and monkeys, just to name a few. Koh Chang is also famous for its fantastic diving and snorkeling spots, making it a favorite for those who love the water.
A Bit of History
Before World War II, Koh Chang was a quiet island, known only to locals. Most of the residents were farmers, making their living through rubber-tapping and coconut harvesting rather than fishing, which is unusual for an island. In 1941, the Thai Navy fought the French in a battle off the southeastern coast of Koh Chang during the Japanese occupation. By the mid-1970s, Koh Chang became a destination for adventurous backpackers who were drawn to its rustic charm and lack of development. In 1982, Koh Chang and its surrounding areas were officially recognized as part of the Mu Koh Chang National Marine Park. Since then, word of this hidden paradise spread, and today, it’s a favorite spot for both international and Thai travelers alike.
Geography
Koh Chang is Thailand’s second-largest island (after Phuket), located in the eastern Gulf of Thailand, about 250 kilometers from Bangkok. The island spans 217 square kilometers and is dominated by jungle-covered mountains. At 743 meters, Khao Salak Phet is the highest peak, offering adventurous visitors a challenge with breathtaking views. The national marine park, including the waters around Koh Chang, covers a vast area of 650 square kilometers, with most of it offshore.
Weather
Koh Chang enjoys a tropical climate, with warm, humid weather all year round and an average temperature of 31°C. There are two main seasons here: the dry season, from November to April, and the rainy season, from May to October. While the rainy season brings plenty of afternoon and evening showers, it doesn’t usually last all day. For the sunniest skies and ideal beach weather, the dry season is your best bet.
